Apple and Microsoft’s upcoming headsets are set to receive 3D Time of Flight (ToF) modules from LG InnoTek, The Elec revealed on Thursday.

The South Korean tech giant will provide the VR and AR device components, which measure and calculate distances between objects with lasers, and has previously supplied Apple’s iPad Pro, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max models with the technologies.

LG InnoTek also supplies the iPhone 13 with components for its lidar-powered AR function for use with 5G networks, and will continue its work with Facebook’s Oculus VR headsets.

According to The Elec, the Seoul-based company is “highly likely” to supply Apple’s AR smart glasses expected in 2023.

The report added the exclusive deal with LG InnoTek procured direct ToF sensors compared to Samsung’s indirect detection methods, which ceased after the firm’s Galaxy S20 series phones.

The news comes after a similar Microsoft-LX Semicon deal, which supplied the Redmond-based firm’s ToF sensors to the latter’s internet-of-things (IoT), logistics solutions, and autonomous robots.

The devices also create 3D models and are used for facial recognition software, and work along with artificial intelligence (AI), microcontrollers, and other key 3D detection components.
