This Monday, Bytedance, Pico Interactive’s parent company, announced new augmented reality (AR) tools for its massively popular social media platform TikTok following a successful beta testing stage late last year.

TikTok is introducing Effect House, an in-app creator platform that enables users to design and share AR effects and experiences with others on the platform. Currently, Effect House has finished beta trials and is available to all TikTok users.

According to the Chinese firm, more than 450 TikTok developers have created AR immersive effects used in 1.5 billion videos.

Laura Gouillon, an extended reality (XR) director, added:

“I’m blown away by how quickly my effects and videos have reached new audiences. In my first week using Effect House I’ve made 18 effects which have collectively reached over 100 million people worldwide, and I’ve grown my audience by over 20% to now over 240,000 followers!”

Keeping Users Safe

To support TikTok’s latest venture in immersive effects, Bytedance outlined its community and effects guidelines to ensure a safe and inclusive online environment.

TikTok’s Trust and Safety team reviews each submitted user-created effect before it reaches the TikTok community. The application also adds a Report Effect feature, enabling users to report immersive content that does not follow TikTok guidelines, which state that submitted content must adhere to specific technical requirements for effects to work seamlessly on smartphone devices.

TikTok splits its requirements between iOS and Android devices with minor differences for each operating system. For example, iOS and Android effects must have a maximum incremental CPU usage of 130 percent and 400 percent, respectively.

Last year, immersive developers Meta announced ‘Personal Boundaries‘ a new user safety measure, following reports from Nina Jane Patel, the Vice-President for Kabuni Ventures, who exposed harassment on the Horizon Worlds Metaverse platform.

More from Btyedance

The news follows a significant restructuring at Bytedance that saw the firm double down on immersive software and hardware.

Last September, Btyedance bought virtual reality (VR) headset firm Pico Interactive for roughly $775 million USD as well as immersive application developer Moonton for $4 billion USD the same year.

Following the company shift, Zhang Yiming, Founder of TikTok and ByteDance, stepped down as the firm reorganised into six businesses to develop its VR future and various mobile applications.

More recently, Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm President and CEO announced a significant partnership with Bytedance at the Mobile World Conference (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain to innovate solutions for building the Metaverse. The tech giant also plans to incorporate Snapdragon Spaces into future Pico devices as part of the partnership.
