Banuba has revealed a groundbreaking new AR capability in the form of pupillary distance measurement.

Banuba, a provider of advanced AI products, is unveiling its “cutting-edge” capability pupillary distance (PD) measurement feature to its Face AR SDK (software development kit). Banuba highlights that this new feature precisely measures the distance between the centres of a user’s pupils, facilitating reliable applications for both medical diagnostics and virtual eyewear try-ons.

Artem Harytonau, CTO at Banuba, commented:

This addition not only enhances virtual try-on experiences but also supports essential medical applications, empowering users to take control of their eye health.”

Banuba is an AR business that has pitched itself as a pioneer in face tracking, virtual try-on, and virtual background technologies. The company offers SDKs for AR and video editing, along with ready-to-integrate solutions for virtual try-ons on the face, hair, and hands.

The business stresses that its PD measurement feature does not require any special devices or reference items (such as a credit card) in the frame, intending to render it more user-friendly, accessible, and safe.

Banuba outlines that pupillary distance is a crucial measurement in optometry, as it directly affects the fit and effectiveness of prescription eyewear. Accurate PD data ensures that lenses are correctly positioned in front of the wearer’s eyes, enhancing visual comfort and clarity. Banuba suggests its new feature empowers users to obtain their PD straightforwardly, simplifying the process of ordering glasses online or consulting with eye care professionals.

Additionally, Banuba’s Face AR SDK includes a camera-to-face distance measurement tool. Banuba adds that eye care solution provider Eyebou has successfully used this feature in collaboration with UNICEF to help diagnose sight issues in over 10,000 orphans.

Will Meta Bring AR Smart Glasses To The Mainstream?

This week, Meta’s CTO confirmed a commitment to AR smart glasses, which will bring a wide range of new use cases into the mainstream as the AR revolution continues apace.

In a recent Q&A, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth addressed the upcoming Quest event and other industry news on his Instagram account and confirmed that an AR product would be present during the showcase.

“I think the AR announcement will be very groundbreaking,” Bosworth said. “We’ve already kind of teased it; when people start to be able to experience it, I think that’s going to really turn some heads. The big announcements are a big deal, and (they) will have a huge impact on the trajectory of VR and MR in the next couple of years. But I don’t know if that counts as groundbreaking.”
