HTC VIVE debuted a new use case for its 5G-backed virtual reality (VR) technologies at the Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.

The company showcased its portable 5G solution, Reign Core, in a demo using remote-controlled (RC) racers on its G-Reign private 5G networks, in partnership with Supermicro.

The technology’s low-latency allowed attendees to watch streamed footage of the RC car races on monitors and HTC VIVE Flow VR headsets with multiple camera angles.

HTC VIVE’s Flow headsets feature a massively compact, innovative form factor for streaming content such as movies, immersive environments, and music with unrivalled portability.

Cameras on the portable network could also detect intrusions on the miniature race tack, triggering an alarm and blocking actions until the interference cleared from the perimeter.

According to one of the speakers, the Reign Core 5G network performed “at a really network-congested environment” of the MWC, showcasing how the private 5G solution performed “brilliantly” with ultra-low latency and high bandwidth traffic.

The Taoyuan City, Taiwan-based enterprise revealed the solution as a specific use case for deploying larger 5G networks used for autonomous factory and facility robots.

A company spokesperson said at the event,

“What we’re trying to show here is the possibility to have wirelessly-controlled, super-responsive, low-danger factory floors. We have things like heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and autonomous smart construction units moving around, being responsive, not crashing into each other, being production, being automated, but being safe as well, all thanks to the 5G network, the autonomous bots, and of course, that smart monitoring camera”

A second spokesperson added that users could deploy HTC VIVE’s Reign Core 5G with a device “the size of your regular suitcase” in just 30 minutes, offering live 5G demos before being installed at a large scale.

HTC VIVE has explored several solutions for its immersive technologies in recent months, namely after it developed a cutting-edge VR attraction for Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia late last year.

The ride combines real-time 3D (RT3D) content with physical and 4D effects for its 59-passenger vehicles, marking a world-first attraction for the theme park and Taiwanese company.

HTC VIVE also teamed up with Psychic VR Lab’s STYLY platform to host immersive content from global artists via the cloud and with the former’s Flow headsets as well as VR devices, mobiles, or browsers.
